What is Early Head Start?

Early Head Start for Family Childcare (EHS for FCC) is a demonstration project that aims to design, implement and evaluate a replicable framework hat supports a partnership between Eary Head Start and family childcare. EHS for FCC increases quality for low-income children in family childcare, which includes health and social services. With 22 programs in 17 states, EHS for FCC is a promising community partnership that serves low-income children and families.

Why is Early Head Start Important
Head Start and Early Head Start promote the school readiness of children from birth to age five from low-income families by supporting their development in a comprehensive way. Many Head Start and Early Head Start programs are based in centers and schools, but EHS for FCC is expanding its scope to family child care homes. Founded over 50 years ago, Head Start began as a program for preschoolers. Today, the program has expanded to serve younger and older children, as well as provide a variety of services to support each child’s early learning, health, and family well-being.
